When choosing an aftermarket wheel, make sure you are not buying something that will soon be just scrap aluminum.   Some of the wheels on the market are easily bent, the finish is inadequate and after a short while they go out of production and can no longer be replaced.   We frequently meet people who have damaged an aftermarket wheel and, when they tried to check on a replacement and learned that their only option was to buy a whole new set.

USED CAR BUYERS

DON'T FORGET TO INSPECT THE WHEELS

If you intend to buy a used car, particularly what is termed a “pre-owned” luxury car, look carefully at the wheels.   We have repaired wheels for many customers who bought used cars and did not notice the damaged wheels until they got the car home.   The appearance of the wheels might tell you something about the history of that vehicle.  

The appearance could also help you formulate your decision to purchase.   If the wheels on the car you are considering are scraped, gouged, chipped or scuffed, it could indicate a history of poor care and maintenance on the part of the previous owner.   Such a history could also suggest that other important vehicle maintenance requirements were neglected.

Noticeable damage could mean that the wheels are also bent or out of alignment and the vehicle's suspension system might even be damaged.   Consider the costs associated with repairs such as these.   And that does not even take into consideration the price of replacing the damaged wheel, which is getting more expensive every year . Keep in mind that replacing a wheel can cost anywhere from $300.00 to over $1,000.00 on some cars.   Obviously, buying a vehicle with damaged wheels can be risky.  

If you are interested in buying a car where the wheels appear damaged, we can repair them for you.   However, before you decide, you might suggest that the seller provide you with some type of documentation that the alignment is okay and the suspension is not damaged.

BE AWARE OF UNSCRUPULUS USED CAR SELLERS

You usually do not have to worry about any of this with reputable dealers but it is not uncommon for some sellers to try to hide the truth about the history of a vehicle.  Devious professionals are the most adept at this unscrupulous behavior.   When it comes to wheels, there are a couple of ways that a used vehicle seller might try to cheat you.

First is the cheap cosmetic cover-up.   This is done by “repairing” a wheel while it is still on the car!  These repairs are quick, cheap, and most of all temporary. These repairs are inferior in quality and are done just so that you will not see the damage until after you have purchased the car.  

Here are a some things you can do to inspect wheels for this type of repair.

•  Check the brake calipers and rotors for overspray.  

•  Look for color mismatches on the spokes and bead of the rim.  

•  Check for paint that's been sprayed over imbedded brake dust.

•  Above all, look for paint that's been sprayed on obvious damage.

A good rule of thumb is that, if you notice that the wheels appear to have undergone on-the-car repairs, stay away!   There is probably more that is being hidden from you!

Secondly, if you notice that the wheels on the car you are interested in are not the style you expected or usually see on that model car, then consider the possibility that they might be a set of cheap knock-offs.  This is especially true if the wheels look brand new!

What has happened is that the original wheels on the car were damaged enough that the seller was forced to do something and elected to replace the wheels with the cheapest thing they could find.  Inferior quality wheels will ultimately mean trouble for you.   Sometimes it's better to buy a car whose wheels show some slight wear.  You can always call us after you buy.

The price of replacing a damaged wheel is rising every year. It can cost anywhere from $300.00 to over $1,000.00 on some cars.   Although repairs are less costly, the aggravation involved in the process of having the repairs done is something you were forced to deal with.   That is, until wheel repair became mobile.

THE AGONY OF OLD CHOICES

Fifth Obstacle

LEASE HOLDERS

TAKE CARE OF YOUR WHEELS

When it comes time to turn in your leased vehicle, be mindful of the condition of the wheels.   If there is damage, the dealer will require you to replace the damaged wheel with a new one .

Anytime the “skin” of the clear coat is broken, additional damage will follow.   One of the best ways to keep your wheels in good condition, is to keep them clean and waxed.   Wash your wheels frequently and NEVER use a cleaner containing acid, which will damage the clear coat.   Use only a cleaner specifically made for aluminum wheels Eagle One makes a fine product, for example.

Also, a couple times a season, a hard wax should be rubbed into the clear coat to insure maximum protection.   Not only will the wax help protect the clear coat, it will prevent any foreign matter, such as road tar and brake dust, from accumulating on the surface.   Wheel Wax is a quality product designed specifically for aluminum wheels.
